My Other PC is a MacBook

Well, today I broke down and bought the new Apple laptop, a mere 13 days after it was released. So far, it’s an absolute pleasure to use. The new remote and Front Row is a blast to play with. I haven’t used iChat yet, but am looking forward to use that free video phone service, as well as Skype.

As a PC power-user, I haven’t had a chance to use Macs too much. It’s a little hard to change my habits at first, but I’m finding that there’s better alternatives.

The most pronounced difference I found was when I plugged in my printer and digital camera — they just worked. How ’bout that?! No searching for hours on end through geek infused driver sites for the one that might work. What a concept.

So far so good. I’ll keep you updated on the transition.

Their recently published survey on our present media era, Among the Audience, released on Apr 20, is an excellent starting point for people wanting to know what this whole ‘internet thing’ is all about.

Highlights include blogging, interactive journalism, wiki’s, podcasting, and the search for a definition of the new media company. Interviews include: Andreas Kluth, David Sifry, Chris Anderson, Jerry Michalski, and Paul Saffo.

Three Degrees of Seperation

Wow! Did I ever get a shock when I saw this picture while randomly browsing through Steve Rubel’s Flickr photostream [Bloggers, Flacks and Journalists Partying Together].

I found Steve’s site, Micro Persuasion, through our mutual blogging host TypePad, who profiled him bec he’s on the Technorati Top 100  bloggers listing. From  his site I went to Flickr and found him sitting here next to Frank Barnako. From my desk here at Westwood One,  I used to email MarketWatch info to Frank on a monthly basis.

1) Steve and I use TypePad,  2) Steve knows Frank,  3) Frank knows me – Three degrees of seperation… and I’d never seen a pic of Frank until now!

Only in this day and age, eh?

Just Saw An Inconvenient Truth

Excellent film. Al Gore reached an effective chord with equal parts of humanity and scientifically based research. Although the subject of global warming is hard to breach without a mountain of graphs that overlap and eventually cause an acute sense of nausea, the generous amount of charts did not have so much of an eye-glazing effect on the audience. Rather, it had a steady, rational flow that seemed to saunter through the data at a browsable clip. So, kudos to the producers for making such scientific work manageable for the average theater-goer, which is to say: the every(wo)man.

On a human level, we found it to be informative, understandable, and yet frightening. At a certain point, the affects of the melting in Antarctica and Greenland is hammered home when showing the 20 feet of flooding in NYC caused by rising ocean waters. The affects were palpable in the theater as a group sucking sound was made by everyone frantically finding their home on the ‘new’ map. The area right off the end of our street, which is a major thoroughfare, is shown as beachfront property! (Finally, a reason to love global warming – Is that wrong?!)

Through this all, one can gleam some hope. For it’s only when we have our backs against our walls do we really show our true colors and the ability to overcome all obstacles when we pool our resources in a combined effort against a commen goal. But is it too late?

Perhaps it is these very catastrophic warnings that we need to WAKE UP and get to work. We can all do our part, and each of these small parts can add up to make a real difference. But we need to start, and we need to keep at it. For the older generation that means to teach and guide the young for as long as you can; and for the younger ones, it means we have to start now and never stop.

Politically, this film is an excellent vehicle for laying the groundwork for a 2008 presidential campaign. I mean, c’mon Al:  "In America, politics is a reneweable resource"?!

Everybody Was MacBook Fighting

It was only a matter of time before some geek figured out how to use the new Apple MacBook as a lightsaber. By utilizing the standard motion-sensor feature that stops the hard drive when it tracks unordinary movement, such as accidentally elbowing your notebook off a table onto the floor. And don’t you know it wouldn’t be long after that that some other geek would reenact a Star Wars fight scene with his new MacBook.

New Apple Store — Open for Business 24/365!

It was an absolute mob scene at Apple’s new Fifth Ave location on Friday, at their brand opening of their only 24-hour,7 days/week, 365 days/year store. The ever elusive Steve Jobs even showed up… which is more than he did for the London shop.
Stars James Woods, Matthew Modine, and Harry Connick, Jr showed up, too.

Check out Apple’s time lapse video of the first 24-hrs.

Grandma Tattoo: “DO NOT RESUSCITATE”

Wow… so this is what it comes down to after the Terry Schiavo case.

Mary Wohlford, 80, of Decorah, Iowa, told the Des Moines Register that "People might think I’m crazy, but that’s OK. Sometimes the nuttiest ideas are the most advanced." Amen. Good luck, Mary. [via smays.com)

This video from YouTube.com is a good example of how websites are getting viewers to voluntarily watch their ads and then go to their websites. The new generation of attracting traffic on the web is by releasing videos like this one and hope that they become viral.

Global Warming Film Presented by Al Gore

From MoveOn.org:

"An Inconvenient Truth is a true story about the hard science and real threats of global warming and it’s told by one of the most inspiring and passionate advocates for change Al Gore.

"How the movie does on opening weekend will decide how the movie is received in the press and possibly how many other cities get to see it. MoveOn.org is encouraging folks to pledge to see the film in advance. It’s important to show the media and the skeptics that hundreds of thousands of Americans care about this issue."
