Conversation Pieces

The Economist featured an article on the art of conversation which I think is good to reflect on.

First are some wonderful points taken from Cicero’s writings (44BC):

  1. Speak clearly
  2. Speak easily, but not too much
  3. Do not interrupt
  4. Be courteous
  5. Deal seriously with serious matters and gracefully with lighter ones
  6. Never criticize people behind their backs
  7. Stick to subjects of general interest
  8. Do not talk about yourself
  9. Never lose your temper

The next are from Dale Carnegie’s classic volume, "How To Win Friends and Influence People" (1937) on his six points to the "art of getting along":

  1. Remember people’s names
  2. Be a good listener
  3. Be genuinely interested in other people
  4. Smile
  5. Talk in terms of the other person’s interests
  6. Make the other person feel important

Also included were the finer points on the art of silence and alternation in the conversation.

[Reflect. Relearn. Repeat.]

Fred Astaire & Eleanor Powell Performance (circa 1940)

Here’s a wonderfully entertaining video that Cindy’s mom, Evelyn, sent us. How incredibly easy they both make it look, don’t you think?
